The Maude Kerns Art Center presents “word & image” featuring the work of Sarah Fagan, Kate Kingston, Corwin Levi, and Kit Sibert, opening with a public reception on Friday, July 24 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. “word & image” features artists who pair paintings, sculptures, and photographs with poetry in ways that complement and enhance each art form. The exhibit is on display through August 28.
In a series titled “Retold Stories,” visual artists Sarah Fagan and Corwin Levi present works directly inspired by the poetry of literary artist Kate Kingston. Fagan, from Portland, Oregon, met Washington, D.C. artist Levi and Colorado artist Kingston at the Brush Creek Residency Program in Saratoga, Wyoming. At a poetry reading there, both Fagan and Levi particularly resonated with Kingston’s poem, “Storyteller,” and the idea for a group show was born. Fagan shows paintings comprised of fields of color and depictions of recognizable objects seen from an aerial viewpoint. Levi exhibits both paintings and sculptures, created by building up layers of words, images, and paint medium. Kingston’s poems are displayed on the gallery wall in large format vinyl letters or on smaller metal plates.
In the series titled “Beyond Me,” local artist Kit Sibert uses her own photographs and poems to reflect upon and understand her relationship with her dying mother. Sibert describes her poems and photographs as “portraits of a conscious and unconscious process . . . being close to the horror and beauty of decrepitude, dying, death and its aftermath, of aging and ending and the intimacy of being present for it.” In “Beyond Me,” Sibert presents seven themes consisting of a poem paired with 2 to 8 photographs.
The public is invited to an Artists’ Talk and Poetry Reading on Saturday, August 1, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Art Center. All of the participating artists will be present to discuss their work.
